The foundation course is essentially a grade IX and X mathematics course designed to acclimatise students to mathematical concepts and their applications in a creative manner. It might be of interest to anyone interested in elementary mathematics irrespective of his/her walk of life.
The course covers certain topics in grade IX and X mathematics in great depth. Though it covers topics from school curriculum, it is not a replacement for regular school/tuitions the students might be taking. The level of difficulty is well beyond that of school. In fact the material is not rigidly meant to be for high school students alone. Anyone who wants to do well in All India competitive examinations or just wants to develop a sound base in elementary mathematics can take this course and benefit from it. The main thrust of the course is on solving problems of a large variety. Many problems from past examinations and some other similar problems have been taken up for discussion. Each problem has its own unique takeway. Some problems require imaginative approach, some require manipulative skills while some are based on some novel application of theory. Many of these problems have a catch in them which is addressed first and then the solution is discussed. For many problems multiple solutions are discussed. It is my experience that these discussions offer greater insight to the material at hand. They help students to hone their analytical skills which are so vital not only in competitive examinations but also well beyond academics. It is expected that a thorough study of these sessions will significantly improve academic maturity of the students and will get them ready for the stiff competition they will face no matter which academic stream they join.
The course has a bunch of 10 sub modules which is a mixed bag of Algebra and Pure Geometry. Some take home problem sheets and test papers along with their solutions are also included. This will prepare the candidates for rigorous training in the subsequent years.
